Mission Statement

Mission Statement

The mission of the Deshon Johnson College Scholarship Foundation and Community Outreach is to keep Deshon’s spirit alive. We are dedicated to raising awareness about public transportation and bus driver’s reckless driving for our communities’ safety. This foundation was established by the family and close friends of Deshon Johnson, who was a 2008 graduate of Montclair High School/2013 college graduate. Deshon was a victim of vehicular homicide by a Coach USA driver operating an NJ Transit bus in Bloomfield, New Jersey on July 18, 2012.

The Memorial Fund has two purposes:

The first is to raise awareness concerning the increasing number of bus driver killing’s and also to create and financially participant in projects designed to improve the quality of life and safety for pedestrians.   Endeavoring to become vessels or outlets to parents who lost their child by establishing a bereavement session and support for those that share the same grief who are looking for someone who cares.

Secondarily, to award an annual college scholarship to a qualified candidate that will meet specific criteria as deemed by the committee.  Deshon’s memory will be rekindled yearly by recognizing a Montclair High School, Kean University, Montclair University or Essex County College student who closely resembles or exemplify the outstanding traits of Deshon during his duration on earth. The scholarship recipient would be defined as an individual striving for harmony, academic distinction, and musical excellence. These award contributions will harmoniously honor Deshon’s memory.
